Antelope Island; famous for its Bison herd of around 700 animals, the Fielding Garr Ranch; the first permanent residence on the island, and the Great Salt Lake; the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River. While many visitors enjoy the island from the road, rest areas, and the beaches; those that explore off road and hike one of the many trails get to discover the inner beauty of the island.
The Frary Peak Trail is just one of the many trails available on the island. This trail takes you on a 3.08 mile journey providing spectacular views, and up close scenery you can only enjoy on foot.
As you begin your hike from the parking area you will immediately start to gain some elevation as the trail makes its way over grassy hills, sagebrush valleys, boulder fields, and cedar covered hillsides. Once at mile marker 3 the trail descends down a rocky cedar covered hillside. This part of the trail is a little more technical as one side of the trail has a very steep drop off and the trail is rockier.
Your goal at this point is in plan view, but you have one more challenge before you reach the top. The end of the trail is steep and requires some scrambling. A staircase was created to assist with this last push to the top.
You made it! You are now standing on the highest peak on Antelope Island. The elevation on top of Frary Peak is 6,596 feet and the views of the island and lake are spectacular. As you glance back at the trail that brought you to your destination you feel a sense of accomplishment, and you should because you just hiked 3.08 miles one way and gained 2,100 feet in elevation from the parking area.
The Frary Peak trail provides beautiful views of the island and the lake most of the way to the top. Although this trail is considered one of the more difficult hikes on the island the rewards are well worth it. You will find very little shade so if hiking in the heat come prepared with plenty of water, hat, sunscreen, and bug repellent.
Take your time, enjoy the views, look for wildlife as you will have a chance to see bison, antelope, sage grouse, bighorn sheep, mule deer, fox and coyotes’ sweeping the mud flats on the edge of the lake for an easy meal, and many other forms of wildlife that call Antelope Island home.
Antelope Island provides a unique outdoor experience for the whole family. Whether you take a hike, float on the lake, or just enjoy the wildlife, visiting Antelope Island is a fun adventure we are sure everyone will enjoy..
To reach Antelope Island, take I-15 to exit 332 (Syracuse/Freeport Center). Travel seven miles west on Antelope Drive to the entrance gate. Once over the causeway follow the signs leading you to the Fielding Garr Ranch. Watch for the Frary Peak signs and a road leading to the trail head parking lot.
