Logan City - Utah Outdoor Activities

Located about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City is the historic city of Logan. There are more than 50,000 residents in the area, with the population projected to double within the next 30 years.

Why are so many people moving to Logan? Because it offers a unique heritage, lots of career opportunities, and more outdoor activities than you can believe.

Logan was founded in 1859. Named after a fur trapper known as Ephraim Logan, the city was officially incorporated seven years later. The city has consistently grown in both size and population, and now boasts a total area of almost 19 square miles to go along with its tens of thousands of residents.

Utah State University is based here and has more than 28,000 students. It’s a highly rated research university. With a young and talented base to draw from, the city also boasts a repertory theatre, opera company, and numerous dance companies. Agriculture and dairy farming are also well established in the city.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the area provides year-round opportunities. The best place to start is Logan Canyon. Following the Logan River as you make your way up the canyon, you’ll place a series of three dams. These are excellent places to stop for a leisurely picnic and some great fishing. While you might only hook into planted rainbows at the dams, there’s always the chance to catch one of the monster browns that have been known to lurk in the deep waters. Believe it or not, a 20-pounder is possible.

Continuing on your way up the canyon, you’ll come to the turnoff for Tony Grove Lake. It’s a gorgeous lake that’s perfect for canoeing and rafting. You can catch a variety of trout species and fry them up in one of the nearby campgrounds.

If you enjoy exploring caves, there are a few in the area to be aware of. At Wind Caves, you can see a trio of arches and a great little cave. Logan Cave is located just off the canyon road. It’s currently closed to visitors to protect the bats that live there. And Minnetonka Cave is a much larger cave that offers tours into its subterranean wonderland.
