About 40 miles north of Salt Lake City and 10 miles east of the Great Salt Lake, you’ll find the city of Ogden. Established for a fur trapper in the mid-1800s, Ogden was actually the first permanent settlement in Utah.
The city was mainly known for its role as a railroad hub for many decades, but now has a reputation as an elite outdoor destination. There’s also a superb restaurant scene and numerous breweries and distilleries, so you can always grab a delicious meal and refreshment after getting back from an adventure.
First up is the great skiing and snowboarding offered in the area. Ogden is within a 20-minute drive of three world-class resorts. These resorts represent nearly 12,000 acres of skiable terrain and get about 500 inches of snow each year, which delivers some amazing downhill action.
Nordic Valley is a great resort for beginners. There’s a lot of easy terrain, as well as some varied runs for more experienced folks. Both snowboarders and skiers are welcome.
Powder Mountain offers extensive backcountry areas to explore. Just make sure that you check the avalanche conditions and take emergency gear anytime you venture into the backcountry.
The best resort in the Ogden area is Snowbasin, which is where the some of the events from the 2002 Olympic Winter Games were held. Skiers and snowboarders will find all manner of terrain at the resort, providing a top-notch experience for your whole family.
In the summer months, these resorts provide excellent bike trails. If you don’t want to bring the mountain bike, you can enjoy stunning views from the various hiking trails. The gondola rides are also a popular activity.
Another great biking destination is the Skyline Trail. This singletrack route takes you past vistas, wildflowers, and wildlife. Other destinations include the Wheeler Creek trail and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.
If you want to leave land for a while, you can go fishing or boating at Pineview Reservoir. Known for massive tiger muskies, this reservoir is amazing. Causey Reservoir also provides great opportunities for water sports.
