The Silver Fork Lodge is located within Big Cottonwood Canyon, which is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, climbing, and fishing, and let’s not forget skiing and snowboarding. There are 2 ski resorts and approximately 120 residents, along with many trails. The canyon also has a rich history that dates back to the 1850s, when it was a city for miners and sawmill workers. However, the strains of silver and gold were very hard to follow, resulting in the last mine closing in the early 1950s.
Another resource utilized in the canyon was timber. Because of the excellent wood supply and clear water source, Silver Fork was home to several sawmills between 1850 and the 1870s. An interesting fact is that all the shingles for the Salt Lake Tabernacle, nearly 600,000 pieces, came from the timber in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
With all the activity in the canyon, the Silver Fork Lodge became the general store for the miners and sawmill workers, along with the sheep and cattle herders. Fast-forwarding to today, the Silver Fork Lodge is still located in its original location, and it still has the rustic charm which offers visitors a glimpse into its history. Many renovations have taken place over the years; however, great care has been taken to preserve the history of the lodge. As you look around, you can still find the original wood beams from the Cardiff Fork Mine constructing the dining room.
The cozy, relaxing atmosphere in the lodge, combined with the delicious home cooking, provides that down-home comfort feeling we all love. If you want to enjoy the fresh outdoors of Big Cottonwood Canyon, you can dine on the patio while surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the mountains.
For those who have never visited Big Cottonwood Canyon or the Silver Fork Lodge, please take the time to drive on up and see the amazing beauty of the canyon, and don’t forget to stop and grab a bite to eat at the lodge. For those who frequent the canyon but have never taken the time to stop at the Silver Fork Lodge, put this on your agenda for the day and indulge in the fabulous home cooking it has to offer.
