Slate Gorge - Utah Uinta Mountains

Taking a drive up the Mirror Lake Highway offers the opportunity to take in the gorgeous scenery and enjoy the many outdoor activities available along the way. One of the most popular roadside attractions is the Provo River Falls. Not far from the falls is an overlook that is just as impressive in its own unique way called the Slate Gorge.

The Slate Gorge Overlook is located 22 miles from the town of Kamas, Utah. The parking area for the overlook is small and will only fit a handful of vehicles at a time. From the parking area just past the sign is a dirt trail leading to the overlook area.

This gorge has been cut away by the Provo River exposing layers of flat rock referred to as slate. From the overlook you can see the geology of this canyon, plus the beauty of the river and two cascading waterfalls.

Getting up Close:

For the more adventurous there is a very steep trail that will lead you to the bottom of the canyon for up close views. If you choose to take this trail to the bottom you do so at your own risk. Remember what you go down you must come back up.

Best time to Visit:

Our visit to the overlook was in early August so the Provo River was slowly meandering its way through the canyon, allowing more of the features to be viewed. We would guess that during spring runoff the views of the river raging through this canyon would be impressive, however a lot of the geology would be obscured by the high-water levels. The best time to take in this view in our opinion would be middle to late summer.

Location:

Slate Gorge - Utah Uinta Mountains

From the town of Kamas, Utah travel 22 miles up the Mirror Lake Highway. On the right side of the road you will see a forest service sign marking the location.

As you’re traveling along this highway it’s easy to bypass several of these attractions as you hurry to get to your favorite hiking trail, campsite, or fishing location. Remember, getting outdoors is about slowing down, escaping the hustle and bustle, and relaxing. So, take a few minutes to enjoy this location you will be glad you did.
