Stewart Falls is a beautiful three-tier waterfall located on the east side of Mt.Timpanogos. Rated one of the most popular hiking destinations in Utah, Stewart Falls can be enjoyed by families of all ages and hiking abilities. The falls can be reached from two different locations; Aspen Grove or the Sundance Resort. Those starting at the Sundance Resort can ride Ray's Lift to Ray's Summit and then hike down to the falls. We chose to began our hike at the Aspen Grove parking lot.
The trailhead parking lot is located just past the Forest Service pay station. The parking lot can accommodate many vehicles and also offers restrooms. The trail begins just to the north of the restrooms and heads southwest to a fork. The right fork is the Mt. Timpanogos trail and the left fork takes you to the falls. From the fork, the trail starts out with a little elevation gain and meanders its way through beautiful groves of Pine and Aspens. Once you reach the water tank the trail levels off. From this point the trail only has a few hilly sections until you crest the top and begin your descent to the falls. As you make your way to the falls you will come to a rocky overlook that has a very steep cliff on one side. This is a great place to take photos and enjoy the view, but use caution especially if you have little ones.
From the overlook there is a steep trail that will lead you down to the base of the falls. This will allow you to get up close and enjoy the spray coming off the falls. On a hot summer day the cold refreshing spray will surely cool you down. Take some time cool off, enjoy the beauty of this natural wonder and make your way back to the trailhead parking lot.
Starting your hike in the Aspen Grove parking lot requires a $6 dollar three day pass. This pass will also allow you to drive the Alpine Scenic Loop and enjoy the many other recreational activities such as Cascade Springs. For those wanting to take the scenic lift to Ray's summit, lift tickets can be purchased at the Sundance Resort. Contact the Sundance Resort for more information.
