The area around the reservoir and up the canyon is actually really pretty and fun to explore. The main outdoor activities around the reservoir include fishing, OHV riding, camping, and just relaxing.
For those who enjoy fishing, Vernon is stocked in early spring with catchable size rainbow trout. Most anglers fish from shore, however you can float on this reservoir with small non-motorized crafts such as canoes, pontoons, float tubes, and fishing kayaks. Our choice of bait, which has produced in the summer months has been Panther Martins. Other traditional baits such as powerbait and worms will also work and produce.
The reservoir offers a Forest Service campground with vault toilets. There is no running water or garbage service, so please if you pack it in, pack it out. The camping area closest to the dam offers sites large enough for trailers. Most of these sites offer a covered picnic table. Even more primitive camping is located on the south end of the reservoir and up the canyon via the Forest Service Road 005. Each site is on a first come, first served basis, so come early to claim your spot especially on the weekends.
A very popular activity around Vernon Reservoir is OHV riding. The Forest Service roads are open to OHV travel as well as other marked trails in the area. If you plan on riding in the area, please have respect for those camping close to the canyon road and slow down as you pass.
The best part of Vernon Reservoir is just relaxing by a nice campfire, enjoying the surrounding area, and the beautiful night sky. If you’re searching for a place to enjoy a quick family get-away check out Vernon Reservoir. Remember this area is primitive, so you must bring everything you will need to enjoy your outing.
From Tooele City proceed south on SR-36 for 30 miles to Vernon. At Vernon the state highway turns left and heads east. Continue approximately one mile and turn right onto Forest Service Road 005. Proceed south for six miles on gravel road to campground.
