We all know that familiar feeling that hits sometime mid-January—the winter blues. The holidays are over, the weather is cold, and the snow seems unrelenting. The best cure? To embrace the winter, not wish it away. Try some of the activities below and create your own antidote to winter restlessness.
Take a hike the winter way, with snowshoeing at one of many locations along the Wasatch Front. The Sundance Nordic Center provides 15 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails that are great for novices and experienced trekkers alike. Rent snowshoes on site, enjoy the trails, and stop by one of the award-winning restaurants before heading home.
With the longest tubing lanes in Utah, Soldier Hollow provides an exhilarating winter experience that will get your heart pumping. The lanes are over 1,200 feet long and thankfully include a lift that comfortably hauls you to the top. Tubing is available in 2-hour sessions for children and adults of all ages.
For the cost of a cheap meal, you can try your hand—or feet—ice skating outdoors in Salt Lake City’s Gallivan Center. The rink is open nearly every evening in the winter, and the cost of admission includes your skate rental. The energetic downtown location, which is encircled with holiday lights, might just cure even the most stubborn winter doldrums.
The Midway Ice Castles have grown from a dad’s home-grown ice cave, to icy wonderlands now created in six locations nationwide. Beautiful LED-lit sculptures, thrones, tunnels, slides, and fountains create a winter paradise to explore.
Here’s your chance to feel like a Winter Olympian without ever stepping foot in a training facility. The Winter Bobsled Experience at the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games Sliding Track will give you the thrill of your life. A professional pilot takes three passengers on an exhilarating ride down the track, generating up to 4-5 times the force of gravity. Riders must be at least 16 years old and weigh at least 100 pounds to participate.
