Gallivan Center Ice Skating Rink

The Gallivan Center located at 50 East 200 South in down town Salt Lake City is an open urban public space that hosts many activities scheduled throughout the year. In the winter months the main attraction is the outdoor ice rink. It’s open Monday through Thursday from 12-9pm, Friday-Saturday 12-12am, and Sunday 12-7pm. The admission is $10 for adults and $9 for kids 12 and under. Make sure you call ahead because they rent out the rink for large private parties. The day we went they were closing it to the public from 7 to 9 for one of these reserved private parties.

My family and friends loved it! We have decided to make it a Christmas family tradition to go to the Gallivan Center at the start of the holiday season, just after Thanksgiving to get ourselves in the spirit of Christmas. It was absolutely one of the most memorable family outings we have had in a while. How can you beat ice skating under the stars and holiday lights to the sound of Christmas music? Before we even left the Gallivan Center my 10 year old daughter was asking if we could come back over Christmas break and do it again.

Even a beginner skater such as me had a permanent grin on my face. It made me feel young again. My oldest daughter was definitely the best skater of our family and took to it very naturally. I think she may have missed her calling as an Olympic speed skater. My seven year old daughter held to the edge at first but eventually became braver as the night went on. Spending a night ice skating at the Gallivan Center reminded me of what the holiday season is all about, spending time with family and friends. It was nice to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, and watch so many other families smiling and having a great time.

If you plan on visiting the Gallivan Center, I would encourage taking UTA’s TRAX instead of driving and trying to find parking. It was very easy and the kids loved the experience of riding TRAX as well. The Gallivan Center is used for a myriad of public events including concerts, exhibits, fairs, and festivals. Do yourself a Christmas favor and enjoy this unique downtown experience for yourself.
