There are more than 14 bodies of water in the United States that go by the name of “Mirror Lake.” While the name itself might not be unique, the version found in Utah’s Uinta Mountains is absolutely distinct for its beauty. One look at the lake’s famously pristine reflection and you’ll see how it earned the name.
Situated amidst the mountains and trees at a lofty elevation of more than 10,000 feet, the Mirror Lake offers great trout fishing. Throw out a spinner or cast a fly, and you have the chance to catch a nice brookie or rainbow. There are even some albino rainbows in the lake, which makes for a fun catch.
If you want to take out a canoe or kayak, you can find access to the water at multiple points. Larger watercraft can be loaded on the boat ramp. Just remember that there are no motors allowed on the lake.
There are picnic areas around the lake, which are especially beautiful when the wildflowers are out in full bloom. If you’d like to camp, there are numerous campsites available. All of them feature tables, tent pads, and fire rings. There are even grills included with the fire rings, making your meal prep easier.
Drinking water is provided onsite, as are vault toilets and trash collection. If you need firewood, you can usually buy some from the host. If you’re bringing horses, mules, or lamas, you’ll want to check out campsites 65-79, as they’re set up for equestrian use.
Mirror Lake is the crown jewel of what’s known as the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. Starting on the west side in Kamas, the highway takes you up through the Uintas. There are scenic viewpoints all along the route, with multiple lakes and campgrounds to choose from.
At its apex, the highway reaches 10,687 feet when you get to Bald Mountain Pass. Continuing down the other side takes you past the Bear River Ranger Station, which is a fun place to stop and explore.
Whether you want to camp, fish, hike, kayak, or canoe, there are plenty of options awaiting you along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway. Each time you make the trip, you’re bound to discover new opportunities.
