The Buckhorn Wash (Draw) Road is located in the San Rafael Swell. Most who have heard of this road may immediately think of the Buckhorn Pictograph Panal, one of the most historical highlights in the Swell. However, for those who venture beyond this 130 foot Native American Rock Art panel you will discover two other unique locations. One is the MK Tunnels, and the other is the Swinging Bridge.
The Swinging Bridge is a 160 foot long suspension bridge that was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937. This bridge was the only bridge over the San Rafael River until the 1990’s. Though the bridge is no longer used for vehicle traffic, visitors can walk across it and explore its unique engineering.
Located directly across the road from the bridge is the Swinging Bridge Campground. This is a great base camp for exploring the many outdoor activities available throughout the Buckhorn Wash. This campground offers picnic tables, and pit restrooms. On our visit, we choose a spot and had a quick luncheon before continuing to explore the swell.
The Swinging Bridge and many other sites can be reached by traveling from Cleveland, Huntington, or Castle Dale on the Buckhorn Wash (Draw) Road, or from Interstate 70 via the Cottonwood Wash Road.
The San Rafael Swell is an isolated desert environment so come prepared. Spring and fall is a great time to visit this area and enjoy the many scenic sites. Summer temperatures can be hot and uncomfortable, and winter nights can be very cold. Most of the roads to the main attractions within the swell are well graded dirt roads that can be traveled on by most vehicles in dry conditions. Be sure before you begin your venture you have a full tank of gas, spare tire, tools, plenty of provisions and water for you and your family.
